It’s the day of 4th of July, and it’s the day of the World Firefly celebration (July 4-5). The theme of this year’s celebration is Hope Rising: “So we celebrate them this year as tiny beacons of hope, sparkling lights carrying a promise that humanity will emerge into a brighter future.”

It’s so comforting to know that we can still enjoy fireflies that have been lighting up Earth’s nights for many million years. Their natural magic inspires us with optimism and hope.

We’ve started seeing fireflies over the past week or two. I’m in SE Michigan. An after-dark walk is the best time to see them at ground level. We have dark surroundings and don’t use insecticidal sprays.
