Toxicity of Landscaping Chemicals

June 15, 2016

Now is the time of the year we are working frantically to control invasive weeds. Here in my yard I am dealing with garlic mustard, buckthorn, goutweed, canary reed grass and crown vetch besides all those other pesky garden-type weeds. Although I’ve dug and pulled a lot of these weeds, in some cases I’ve simply had to resort to chemical management through herbicides because there are just not enough hours in the day to control them manually.  Here’s an excellent resource to help you determine the toxicity of commonly used landscaping chemicals.

Thank you Maryann Whitman for bringing this webpage to my attention.

P.S.  Last year I removed 100s of box elder seedlings from my woodland. This year in their place are buckthorn seedlings and garlic mustard. It seems like a never-ending project. I try to think of it as a good exercise regimen. By the end of the year I should be in fantastic shape!

Me, too, Donna. I’ve let some spaces go for too many years. Just piled 6 yds mulch, but need to resort to chemicals for some nasties before I spread it. I am editing my gardens this year and giving a lot of my favorites to friends with site requirements, etc. Initially I used no-mow grass in some areas instead of bark mulch and those areas are pretty much weed free from the competition. I’m glad I tried it–less work and expense for me.

Hi! Mandy — it’s good to hear from you. I’d love to have some photos of your no-mow areas to use in a future post. Send a couple when you have time. Thanks.
