May is American Wetlands Month created in 1991 by the EPA and its governmental and private sector partners to acknowledge the importance of wetlands to our ecological, economic and social health. There is much to be learned about the value of the wetlands to our very existence on this Earth. One of my favorite stories from the Wild Ones Journal goes back to the days in which we first began fundraising for the purchase of the WILD Center. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I do.
“The Marsh – Nature’s Water Purifier” by Tom Schneider from the July/August 2006 issue of the Wild Ones Journal
A recent story published in the Wisconsin Natural Resources magazine includes Chiwaukee Prairie Illinois Beach Lake Plain, and features Wild Ones member Pam Holy. Wild Ones Fox Valley Area Chapter is touring this site on May 21st which “includes six different wetland types, prairie and oak savanna, and is home to more than 930 native plant and 300 animal species.” I’m looking forward to it.
Donna, So glad you published the article about wetlands. That was featured on the Larry Meiller show yesterday on Wis. Public Radio. His guest was very knowledgeable.
It is so important to protect our valuable wetlands.
Yes, I agree with you, Lucy. About 80% of our hunting property consists of swamping wetlands. It is such a wondrous place in which to roam around; so different in many ways from the hardwoods next door.
I agree with Lucy, the article was fun to read.
Hi! Roger. It’s good to hear from you again. Glad you liked the article. Most people don’t understand the importance of wetlands; they see them as a hindrance of development. But I’m always pleased to see and hear all the activity that goes on in the wetlands from the birds to the insects to the amphibians to the reptiles to the mammals.
