Yellows of a Late Summer Prairie

September 5, 2018

Late summer is a great time to see all the yellow blooming forbs of the prairie. Although this year between the hot humid weather, the bugs and now the rain storms, some of the plants are getting pretty beaten up, I managed to catch a few good shots. SeeĀ  what you think….

Woodland Sunflower (Helianthus strumosus ) and Branched Coneflower (Rudbeckia triloba)
Black and Yellow Prairie Spider (Argiope aurantia) on grapevine.*
Some pretty beaten Ox-Eye Sunflower (Heliopsis helianthoides), and Canadian Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) with a hungry bee.
Monarch butterfly on well-eaten Cupplant (Silphium perfoliatum)
Monarch butterfly on Branched Coneflower (Rudbeckia triloba)
Sweet Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia submentosa), Branched Coneflower (Rudbeckia triloba) and Sawtooth Sunflower (Helianthus grosseserratus) obscuring neighbor’s yard.
Black & Yellow Garden Spider (Argiope aurantia) behind web on Grapevine.

*I noticed the big guy because of the white zigzag web he had woven along the grapevine, behind which he was hiding. It took a long arm to catch the shot above of the black and yellow predator hoping to catch some prey.
