March 2, 2018

Although typically accepted as a Wisconsin native plant, the true Wisconsin purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea)
Pale Purple Coneflower (Echinacea pallida), Culver’s Root (Veronicastrum virginicum), Hoary Vervain (Verbena stricta), Purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) and Prairie Petunia (Ruelliai humilis) are wonderful pollinator plants. I’m pleased to announce that this is the time of the year many of the Wild Ones chapters hold their annual plant sales. It’s a great opportunity to purchase native plants at a lucrative price to add to your landscape, while at the same time “talking to the choir” about native plants, pollinators and the environment in general.

This year’s Wild Ones Fox Valley Area Chapter (WOFVA) plant sale will again be held at the WILD Center, 2285 Butte des Morts Beach Rd, Neenah, Wisconsin from 9AM to 2PM CST on May 19, 2018. Pre-orders are due March 31, 2018.

Plants featured are high quality nursery-propagated native forbs, grasses, ferns and vines in 4-inch pots with full green top growth, 1- to 2-year growth. They can be pre-ordered or chosen the day of the plant sale. Trees and shrubs are offered by pre-order only. WOFVA volunteers will be on-site to help buyers plan butterfly and pollinator gardens with native plants, or to integrate these plants into their existing gardens. Directions to WILD Center.  Download a copy of the Pre-Order Plant Sale form.

This year’s Wild Ones Columbus Chapter (WOC) plant sale will be held at Whetstone Recreation Center, 3923 N High Street, Columbus, Ohio on May 12, 2018 beginning at 9AM EDT. They will have plants from the Natives in Harmony Nursery who grows only Ohio genotype natives, as well as plants from the Tartan Fields Golf Club and WOC members’ gardens. Get there early for the best pick.

Wild Ones Oak Openings Chapter (WOOO) holds their Blue Week Weekend Native Plant Sale May 19-20, 2018 at the Kitty Todd Nature Preserve, 10420 Old State Line Rd, Swanton, Ohio. Besides wildflower and grass plants, they will also have native seeds for sale. All plants sourced from the Oak Openings Region and Great Black Swamp.

Wild Ones Rock River Valley Chapter (WORRV) is combining their woodland and prairie plants sales this year. The sale will be held on May 11,2018 from 3-7PM at 4601 Paulson Road, Caledonia, Illinois. The pre-order brochure will be mailed in late March and orders will be due April 27, 2018. There will be extra plants available for sale on the pick-up date including wetland an pond species.

WILD FOR MONARCHS

Wild Ones continues in its efforts to save America’s favorite butterfly, along with other pollinators, through their Wild for Monarchs (WFM) campaign. Through their plant sales, chapters encourage everyone to buy and plant more milkweed (host plant for Monarchs) and more nectar plants (food sources for pollinators). See the WFM brochure for a list of Midwestern plants appropriate to plant for pollinators.
