Walk with Tonette Walker

July 21, 2017

There are many lovely gardens at the Kiwanis Park. Note the prairie in the background flanked by Reineck Woods.

The City of New Holstein (Wisconsin) will be hosting Wisconsin’s First Lady Tonette Walker on Friday, July 28, 2017 for a two mile walk through the Kiwanis Trail System. The trail system includes the Reineck Woods, the New Holstein prairie and the Kiwanis Park. Regardless of your political affiliation, I recommend you plan to join the First Lady on her tour.

Walkers should arrive at 9:30AM at Kiwanis Park Community Center, 1725 Silvermoon Lane, New Holstein for a the walk scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.  Refreshments will be provided at the conclusion of the walk. Individuals, groups, businesses and anyone else are invited to attend.

The New Holstein Prairie

Most spring ephemerals lie close to the ground, but Shooting Stars have long stems with pretty white to lavendar flowers at the end. They make a nice transition plant from woodland to prairie edge.

Several years ago in June friends and I visited the New Holstein Prairie and had just missed the Shootingstars (Dodecatheon meadia). This past May we again visited the prairie, but in time to see the Shootingstars. This prairie is an awesome site to see. Don’t miss the chance to walk through it!

Walk with Walker

The enntrance to the Kiwanis Park leads through the Reineck Woods to the Prairie and the rest of the Kiwanis Park.

Throughout the year the First Lady Tonette Walker invites the people of Wisconsin to “Walk with Walker” as she visits some of Wisconsin’s most picturesque trails, parks and landscapes, promoting health and fitness and showcasing some of the beautiful, but lesser known sites across the state.

A variety of Trails are selected for organized Walk with Walker events around the state each year.  The first lady welcomes local residents, visitors on day-trips and friends and family to join her on the trails while exploring Wisconsin’s treasure chest of picturesque scenery.

The State Department of Tourism orchestrates all the events for the First Lady concerning the Walk with Walker. This event is in conjunction with the Calumet County Department of tourism and the City of New Holstein.
