Something to be Thrilled About

February 23, 2018

I’ve been spending a lot of time watching the Olympians — wishing I was younger and had their energy. I am thrilled when I see young people win one of the coveted Olympic medals and feel sad when they just miss the reward. Watching the Olympics is an easy way to take my mind off the goofy weather we have been having again this February. But deep down I know — regardless of the weather — soon we will be seeing the first spring ephemerals pop through the ground to thrill us with their energy as well.

I thought today I’d share some photos to brighten your day and thrill you with anticipation for spring. Enjoy! (Click on a photo. Then click on it again to enlarge it.)

Trout Lily (Erythronium americanum) & Cutleaf Toothwort (Cardamine concatenata)
Dutchman’s Breeches (Dicentra cucullaria) & Cutleaf Toothwort (Cardamine concatenata)
Trout Lily (Erythronium americanum) , Mayapple (Podophhyllum peltatum) & Violet
Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis)
Dutchman’s breeches’ (Dicentra cucullaria) white flowers remind one of pants hanging on a clothesline.
And the bad — Garlic Mustard (Alliara petiolata)
