Today, as I approached the stop sign at the edge of my street, I saw a snapping turtle attempting to cross the street. I immediately stopped the car. Getting out of my car, I was sure the turtle was dead. But no, it was only teasing. I went back to the car and put on John’s gloves. It was a sturdy pair! I picked the turtle up by the far end (tail end) of the shell and carried it across the street. I put it down in the grass, and it scurried away. By the time I went to get the camera, it had entered the retention-pond prairie.
Good thing I happened along! That is a very fast-paced street!!
Thanks for saving the turtle’s life, Donna! Way to go!!

In our garden, in the spring, we stand behind a snapping turtle and watch them scoop out dirt with their back leg, and then watch her drop a good number of eggs into the hole.
The next morning, pieces of egg shells are laying around the hole. An overnight tasty treat for a raccoon who happened to be passing by.
Wouldn’t it help the eggs, Ken, if you were to put a covered fence around it?
Yes, Donna! I’ve done that. But, lately we seen more soft shell turtles than snapping turtles sunning themselves on logs we have in the marsh. Not sure why!
Thanks for sharing your story Donna, for being observant and helping the turtle out!
Thanks, Kathleen — Donna
