This has been the perfect summer for beginning my retirement. Although last year was actually my first year, I spent that winding down from the activities related to my work as Wild Ones Executive Director. It was not easy winding down after nearly 20 years of work.
Summer to Relax
But this summer was relaxing. It has been a great time to enjoy my yard and all that it has to offer.
All the spring rains brought an early show to our woodland and such-h-h a magnificent show to our prairie, and the pool area has been a private retreat just to enjoy my vegetable gardens and potted plants and statuary.
Common Buckeye (Junonia coenia)
It has also been a good opportunity to see more of the wildlife that inhabits our landscaping. A new butterfly for me, I’ve not noticed a Common Buckeye (Junonia coenia) before. In this video it is nectaring on a Tall Joe Pye Weed (Eupatorium fistulosum). I understand from my research, the Common Buckeye is not a typical Wisconsin butterfly; it is an immigrant from farther south.
