Leaving the Tallgrass Prairie

July 29, 2019

Reference my earlier posts Tallgrass Prairie, Flint Hills Tallgrass Prairie – Part 1 and Part 2, and Native Stone Byway.

Alas, we had to leave this beautiful wild paradise and head for home. Along the way, of course, we saw more beautiful rolling landscape and more beautiful wildflowers. These were taken at a Kansas rest stop which featured its own tallgrass prairie.

Lemon Mint (Monarda citriodora)
White Prairie Clover (Dalea candida)
Isn’t this an unusual looking forb? I love it as much as the Monarch butterflies do. Spider Milkweed (Asclepias viridis) photo by Susan Forobes
Green Milkweed (Asclepias viridis) pods and the leaves of the Catclaw Sensitive Briar (Schrankia nuttallii)
Tube Penstemon (Penstemon tubaeflorus) photo by Susan Forbes
Sullivant’s Milkweed (Asclepias sullivantii), Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) and just a tiny showing of Butterflyweed (Asclepias tuberosa).

What a perfect site to end our journey through Kansas’ tallgrass prairie.

Susan and I ended our vacation in Kansas City, Missouri. First thing on our list was a stop at the Union Pacific Railroad Depot, followed by a trolley tour of the City and lunch at Pierponts restaurant. The following day we visited the Arabia Steamboat Museum before we headed for home. It was another journey of a lifetime. Even though we didn’t get to experience the symphony on the prairie, we had a magnificent adventure!
