Identifying Native Prairie Plant Seedlings

March 30, 2017

It’s a little early yet, but soon we should be seeing seedling plants rising from the ground. If you’re like me, you have a difficult time determining if these seedlings are weeds or native plants. I know this is a problem for others because it’s the question most frequently asked of me by native plant enthusiasts.

Here’s a Prairie Seedling and Seeding Evaluation Guide available through Wild Ones. It’s a collaboration by more than 15 state agency and non-profit partners and covers 54 prairie and 26 agricultural (weed) seedlings in the Upper Midwest.

I’m also pleased to tell you about an on-line native prairie plant seedling i.d. guide. It covers the Central USA Region but many of the seedlings match the plant species we find in the Midwest. There are also many other plant i.d. guides available through NRCS.  Thank you Toni Stahl for making me aware of these guides through her Nature Scoop blog.
