Gardening Alternatives

January 10, 2018

Last May I introduced you to a new book by Charlotte Adelman and Bernard Schwartz entitled Midwestern Native Shrubs and Trees: Gardening Alternatives to Nonnative Species. It’s a great companion book to their book entitled The Midwestern Native Garden: Native Alternatives to Nonnative Flowers and Plants, an Illustrated Guide.

Both books include descriptions of hundreds of non-native plants and their native alternatives to use in your gardens, along with other design information. Think beauty, fragrance, easy care, critters — birds, bees and butterflies.

Now that the holidays are over, it’s time to start dreaming about enjoying our natural landscaping and native plants as the weather warms. Here are a few podcasts to get you started.

Garden Talk: Native Alternatives to Non-native Plants by Larry Meiller with Charlotte

On Earth Day, Help Planet Through Gardening by Larry Meiller with Doug Tallamy

The Native Plant Podcast by John McGee with Neil Diboll
