Ephemerals

April 16, 2021

There is much more to see. The immature Cooper’s hawk is flying around to check out bird feeders because they do go after small birds. The pollinators have just a smidgen of hope to see wildflowers.

Here in Northeast Wisconsin I have seen:

Immature Cooper’s hawk has been fleeting around for a couple of weeks.
Sedum (Sedum acre)
Wild leek (Allium tricoccum)
Wild ginger (Asarum canadense)
Shooting star (Dodecatheon meadia)
Pagoda dogwood (Cornus alternifolia)
Mayapple (Podophyllum peltatum)
Butterfly violet (Violet papilionacea)
Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica)
Trout lily (Erythroniuim americanum, great Solomon’s seal (Polygonatum biflorum), early meadowrue (Thalictrum dioicum)
Black cohosh or bugbane (Actaea racemosa)
Dutchman’s breeches (Dicentra cucullaria)
False rue anemone (Isophyrum biternatum)
Virginia waterleaf (Hydrophyllum virginianum)
Wild geramiun (Geranium maculatum)
Bloodroot (Sanguinara canadensis) going to seed.
Oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) and yellow fawn lily (Erythronium americanum)
Common oak sedge (Carex pensylvanica)
Ironwood, male (Humulus lupulus)
Cutleaf toothwort (Dentaria laciniata)
European garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata) is a invasive weed. It starts growing earlier in the season and out-competes the ephemerals.
