Earth Science Week October 8-14, 2017

October 6, 2017

Earth Science Week for 2017 is scheduled for October 8-14th.  It is sponsored by the American Geosciences Institute, the U.S. Geological Survey, NASA, the National Park Service among others. Its the perfect time to increase our knowledge of science and to share what we know with family and friends.

The Miracle

Have you ever considered  what a miracle of science a native plant species is? And how through evolution the biodiversity that makes up the Earth came to be? It’s mind-boggling when you think of it. How could this miracle we live in every day come to be? Why do do some humans not appreciate the complexity and take better care of it?

Next week gives us all the chance to try to catch up.

“This image is a view of South America and portions of North America and Africa from the Mercury Dual Imaging System’s wide-angle camera aboard MESSENGER….Plants reflect near-infrared light more strongly than either red or green, and in this band combination, near-infrared is assigned to look red. Apart from getting a clearer image, the substitution reveals more information than natural color. Healthy plants reflect more near-infrared light than stressed plants, so bright red indicates dense, growing foliage….” Photo courtesy of NASA.

“Earth Science Week is October 8-14, 2017. Are you and your students ready? Check out some of the materials available for your school.

Get a free toolkit. Each year, a new Earth Science Week toolkit is released containing educational materials for all ages. Materials from sources like NASA and National Park Service include a program poster and school-year activity calendar, as well as activities, a game, and other resources from distinguished program partners. Explore available toolkits.

Find K-12 lessons by grade or topic. The Earth Science Week website has numerous classroom activities searchable by grade or by topic. Most are also categorized based on the Next Generation Science Standards and the earlier National Science Education Standards. Browse through activities to prepare.”
