Digging in the garden will always be a lifesaver for me. I dig in the soil and cut down invasives.

While away from the computer, there are three tools I rely on most: a shovel, pruners, and Gel Roundup.
A shovel for removing plants and locating them in a proper place.
Pruners and Gel Roundup for whacking common (Rhamnus cathartica) buckthorn and cup plants (Silphium perfoliatum). I used to get Gel Roundup through Ace Hardware Stores, but recently I have found it at Amazon and Pick ‘n Save. I have used it for four years now, and the cup plants and buckthorn have not come back.
In my yard, cup plants and buckthorn are no longer a problem with my Gel.
Hi Donna,
Is the Gel Roundup easier to use than the liquid? I’m assuming you cut the larger buckthorn if you can’t remove them with a shovel. Then you apply the Roundup?
We have way too many buckthorn on the perimeter of our yard growing under evergreens. Any good suggestions you can give for getting rid of the buokthorn will be appreciated. Do you have a special time of the year that works best to kill the buckthorn? I have been told late fall is good timing. What is the cost of the Gel Roundup on Amazon or Pick ‘n Save?
Lucy — It is easier than the liquid. Just a Gel! Cut the cup plant down anytime, but the buckthorn is most successful with the fall. $15 to $20 — Donna
Donna, can you add red dye to the gel so that you can see where you’ve applied it?

I don’t see anywhere that you can add it, Barb — Donna
