Since I’ve had time to spend researching information available through the Internet, I’ve had the opportunity to learn more about many things which have always interested me, but had little time to pursue. One in particular is women’s professional growth — a subject near and dear to my heart!
I was not aware there was an American Business Women’s Day. It’s official annual celebration day is September 22 and it is intended to recognize all working women. Although its first annual event was held 1982, American Business Women’s Day was officially recognized by Congressional resolution and proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan in 1983 and again 1986. The day honors the contributions of American women business owners and working women, and celebrates their accomplishments.
American Business Women’s Association
The day was started by the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) which was founded on September 22, 1949 by Kansas businessman Hilary Bufton, Jr and three Kansas City business women who realized business training and education were important workplace issues for women. It is a professional network for women working in business and women business owners.
ABWA focuses on providing opportunities for business women to grow professionally and personally. It is designed “to bring together women, at all stages of their careers, seeking business opportunities, professional development and education, and networking support.” It has chapters in all 50 states.
So if you get the opportunity, take the time to congratulate a working woman for not only making an impact on the community through her job, but also for the opportunity she made for personal and professional growth. And, while you’re at it, congratulate yourself as well. Whether you work for a for-profit, a non-profit or yourself…whether you are paid or you volunteer your time and your talents….we women are working and growing personally and professionally, and we deserve to be congratulated!
Congratulations! to us all!!
Great article, Donna.
Thanks, Lucy.
