I had such luck getting some beautiful specimen photos of the flowers blooming right now I just had to share them. Enjoy!
The Wood Violet (Viola papilionacea) is Wisconsin’s State Flower, and an important host plant for the fritillary butterflies.
A bumble bee (Bombus rufocinctus) nectaring Virginia Waterleaf (Hydrophyllum virginianum). My yard is a sea of color from early blooming plants.
Wild Geraniums (Geranium maculatum) are a welcome sight this time of year. Their bright pink blossoms show their smiling faces everywhere in my native plantings.
Another bumble bee (Bombus impatiens) finds Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia virginica) a welcome treat.
The lilac is native to Europe and temperate Asia, but is a beloved ornamental here in America. My mother often spoke about scouring the countryside for lilac blossoms for their wedding bouquets on May 23, 1942. They had had an early warm spring and the lilacs were pretty much done blooming by their wedding day. (Tigerton, Wisconsin)
